Blogging for yesterday--I was tired. I was seriously dreading this day, though it turned out to be one of those occasions where my worrying turned out to be completely unfounded, and I think I really had fun for the first time in a long time, which is a weird thing to say. So I got up at 8 and reconsidered going for about 5 minutes, but I got ready and went. I left around 9 and got there around 9:30, when registration and breakfast stuff was happening. On the way to the library I saw the editor who Iapos;d spoken to on Thursday--he was holding up a sign in the mall because the new management wouldnapos;t let them post the signs, so that was pretty funny. Anyway, I got the registration package stuff, talked briefly with a few people, had some timbits, etc. I also posted a poem I had lying around on this bulletin board, which was up for such a purpose. It filled up around lunchtime. I went into the auditorium for some speeches and introductory stuff, which wasnapos;t too interesting, as well as the first raffle draw, and after the authors/professionals who were presented were introduced, we broke into 3 groups, with each person having a choice of what workshop to attend. So I went to the thing led by Allison van Diepen or however itapos;s spelled, the author of some of those books my sister really likes. Basically we just sat in this room and listened to her presentation, and did question and answer stuff. It was good though. Iapos;ve heard a lot of that information before, but there was also some new stuff I got out of it that I might find useful. About halfway through, though, it was clear that we wouldnapos;t be doing any actual activities. This was a problem because one of the things they were doing was making this apos;instant anthologyapos; dealy, which would be published (aka photocopied) by the time we left, and they wanted submissions by lunch (Iapos;d been talking to one of the people running this yesterday, and it was amusing to basically taunt her throughout the whole process of her putting this together). So for the last half of the presentation I started writing something, and finished it at the beginning of lunch while everyone was getting food. They actually extended the deadline later, but Iapos;d already done it, so w/e. Most people put in stuff they had on them, but I just wrote something new and it was pretty bad, but thatapos;s cool. I should type it up and make serious changes and then leave it on my computer--I guess Iapos;m good at writing under pressure. (I have a feeling a lot of the above made no sense...well, hopefully I remember). It was lunchtime, so I grabbed a sandwich (the food was really good) and ate that, and brought a can of sprite into the auditorium for the open mic performance they were doing. Now, this is really where I started having a good time. This open mic artist started off the performance, and also improvised before it began, and she was really good. Over 20 people signed up to perform, which was really impressive, and while there were a lot of plain readings, some of them were really good. It was actually to the point that I want to put together some kind of performance like that and try it out, though I probably never will. But yeah, the performances were varied and many were excellent, and a few were hilarious. Some time in the middle of that event I morphed into whatever rare creature I become when Iapos;m having a good time, and kept that up for the rest of the day. For the afternoon there were more workshops, but two of them seemed boring so I went to the comics/graphics novels one with some comic book writer whose name I donapos;t remember. It was definitely fun, though, and I ended up drawing this crude comic which I was pretty fond of. I spent the whole time joking around with these two girls who had done one of the better open mic performances--improvised storytelling and sound effects--which had brought in a whole lot of laughs. So the afternoon workshop was great, and there are some comic artists I should look up now. In any case there was another period of snacks before the final meeting in the auditorium. I took the time to fill out this evaluation sheet that they wanted people to do. So at the end there were closing remarks, and a raffle which lasted a really long time since a bunch of winners in a row werenapos;t there. It was fun, though, because everyone was obviously so riled up by that time that there was a lot of shouting and laughing. It was just really cool. The instant anthology things actually got done (), so I picked up a copy of this enormous photocopied work filled with instantly written or selected things, including my story which Iapos;m reluctant to even read again (though Iapos;ll have to if I want to type it up). So I left. On the way to the bus stop I was very worried about not having gotten peopleapos;s contact info, since Iapos;m never sure and always awkward with social stuff. Ironically, though, someone who was at the conference noticed my neutral milk hotel buttons on the subway. For the two stops I was on we talked and they asked for my info, so I guess I canapos;t complain. So when I went home I was in weird moods, as I always am when walking along Bathurst from Wilson to my house. I donapos;t think anybody actually knows how insane I am when Iapos;m walking this stretch every time (though especially this time). I talk to myself, sing, make strange gestures, etc. But I think I was in a generally good mood.
Of course, by the time I got home I wiped all that craziness away, though the rest of the day was still good. Iapos;m not sure if I can remember the order of things happening very well, though. I probably hung around watching TV or doing nothing (actually, I might have been talking to a bunch of people on msn) until I ate. We actually ate later though, which means I was probably on msn talking to people, and maybe even playing some addictinggames. So we had this expensive roast for dinner which was ok but not that great, though that isnapos;t too important. When I finished I started to work on the opinion piece I was supposed to write for the newspaper (I think I did this before I washed my hair). So that took a while, since I was also watching tv and stuff, and taking a lot of time to get my thoughts in order. But I wrote a 540 word piece which I think is pretty good. I got my sister to read it, and (after he bugged me for a while) Alex to read it, and then I sent it off. I think I must have washed my hair around then, or maybe I just wasted time on the computer and watched tv a little first, I canapos;t remember. All I know from that point on is that eventually I found myself falling asleep on the rocking chair in my living room, so I dashed off to bed without ljing or doing anything else. I remember I was disappointed that there wasnapos;t really anything on tv.
